DEMAND FOR INSULATORS HEATS UP
A combination of freezing temperatures and a growing awareness of the benefits of fitting proper insulation have led to an increase in demand for professional installers. Therefore anyone experienced in fitting loft or cavity wall insulation could be earning thousands of pounds more, by working as an assessor, part time on behalf of a Further Education college and passing their skills onto the next generation.
The number of people enquiring about learning these and other building skills is so high that colleges are in desperate need of assessors and are working with Protocol National, a company that specialises in providing assessors, lecturers and Learning Support Workers to FE colleges nationwide, to try and fill some of the vacancies.
Thousands of people in the UK are qualified workplace assessors, often having acquired the qualification as part of another course. However the organisation knows that many of these will never have utilised these skills – especially in vocational trades such as building.
Protocol National Chief Executive Philip Harrison explained why demand is so high: “There has recently been a lot of emphasis on the benefits of ensuring buildings are properly insulated – both from energy efficiency and cost saving perspectives.
“Regulations have been introduced to ensure that social housing and public buildings meet certain standards and there has also been a dramatic increase in the number of individuals looking to retrofit insulation in their homes.
“All this has combined to create a demand for people with the skills to fit insulation and in order to meet this we need qualified and experienced individuals to help train the next generation.”
There is now such a high level of demand for qualified assessors in this and other sectors that generous rates of pay are being offered by colleges.
According to Philip, some full time assessors can earn up to £50,000, but there are a whole host of opportunities on offer that can be much more flexible. Because it is part time, the work is flexible and can fit around a current job or family commitments, giving finances a boost and providing a great way of furthering a career or taking a sideways step.
