FLEXIBLE WORKING THAT FITS ROUND THE SCHOOL RUN

The children are back at school and many parents across Buckinghamshire are once again finding themselves facing the challenge of juggling the school run with work and other commitments.

Now Aylesbury College is giving skilled individuals the chance to experience a more flexible working life teaching or assessing in Further Education, and is working with Protocol National, a company that provides Lecturers and NVQ Assessors to over 250 FE colleges across the country, to raise awareness of the opportunities on offer.

Ann Biggins, Protocol National Business Development Manager explained, “Because enrolment figures are higher than ever this year, there are huge levels of demand for experienced people to pass on their skills and knowledge in subjects as diverse as Child Care to Construction.

“Working as either a lecturer or an assessor offers a positive work life balance and a rewarding new career. The current demand is also good news for those looking to work flexibly as it means the timetable is expanding all the time. Therefore there are lots of opportunities for part time or evening work which are ideal for fitting around family life or other commitments, not to mention the holidays.

“Legislation may have increased the number of people who have the right to request flexible working, but these requests are not always granted and often do not cover school holidays.”

While lecturers teach students skills in the college environment, assessors are generally more focused on workplace learning. They provide support and guidance to candidates taking NVQs in their own workplace, observing them as they work towards their qualification.

With anyone currently working in a vocational career having the knowledge and ability to teach part time in a Further Education college, the skills and knowledge gained in your day-to-day job can be enough to get started whilst embarking on an introductory teaching qualification
