NHC AND PROTOCOL NATIONAL UNITE TO BACK A VERY SPECIAL FOOTBALL TEAM
The Great Britain Deaf Football Team will be taking part in this year’s ”Deaflympics“ in Taipei, Taiwan, from 5th to 15th September 2009 with the support of sponsorship provided by North Hertfordshire College and Protocol National, the largest single provider of staff education services to the Further Education sector in the UK .Deaflympics is a major international sporting event that takes place every four years. Uniquely, it provides deaf sportsmen and women with the chance to participate in a wide range of activities, including athletics and football, on a world stage where they can perform to the best of their ability against the world’s finest.
Sign language is a vital element of the Deaflympics and the GB team’s manager and coach, Phillip Gardner, is a specialist in teaching this skill. In addition to his team responsibilities, Phillip is a tutor at NHC, supplied to the College by Protocol National to teach sign language to students. Phil Harrison, Chief Executive of Protocol National, said, “Phillip is an outstanding tutor and there could be no better ambassador, manager, and trainer for team GB. We are pleased to be able to offer our support to him and the team as they head to Taipei.”
Under the direction of Phillip Gardner, the GB team were gold medal winners at the previous Deaflympics held in Melbourne during 2005, and Phillip is looking for gold a second time this year.
NHC and Protocol National have jointly provided a contribution of £1,000 to help fund Phillip Gardner carry out his essential GB team coaching and management duties. “We are immensely proud of Phillip and privileged to be able to help support him in this year’s quest for gold,” said Signe Sutherland, Vice Principal at North Hertfordshire College.
