FLEXIBLE WORKING IN FURTHER EDUCATION

While 6 April sees new laws extending the right to request flexible working introduced, many working in Further Education already enjoy these benefits.

Roles as a lecturer or NVQ assessor in the  Further Education sector already offer a positive work life balance and rewarding career and opportunities currently exist for skilled professionals across the region.

Protocol National, a company that provides Lecturers and NVQ Assessors to over 250 FE colleges across the country, is currently working with over 250 FE colleges to find specialists in subjects as diverse as Health & Social Care, Hair & Beauty, Sciences and Business Administration. With enrolment figures as high as ever, there’s more flexibility than ever in the industry.

While many industries are floundering in the current economic climate, the numbers enrolling at colleges are as high as ever. The government is continuing with its Train to Gain scheme, which encourages employers to offer additional training to their workforce and there are lots of other people trying to learn new skills or change direction following redundancy.

What this means is that the number of courses on offer and how they fit into a timetable is expanding all the time. This means there are lots of opportunities for part time or evening work – ideal for fitting around family life or other commitments.

While lecturers teach students skills in the college environment, NVQ assessors are generally more focused on workplace learning. They provide support and guidance to candidates taking NVQs in their own workplace, observing them as they work towards their qualification.

With anyone currently working in a vocational career having the knowledge and ability to teach part time in a Further Education college, the skills and knowledge gained in your day-to-day job are enough to get started initially and teaching qualifications can be obtained at a later stage.
