SOUTHGATE COLLEGE OFFERS MORE FLEXIBLE OPPORTUNITIES

As new laws extending the right to request flexible working are introduced, a local college is giving skilled individuals the opportunity to find out more about how a career in teaching could be the key to a more flexible working life.

An event is being held at Southgate College on Thursday 2 April to show people how becoming a lecturer or assessor in Further Education can easily and quickly change your work/life balance, as well as offering a rewarding career. The event is being run by Protocol National, a company that provides Lecturers and NVQ Assessors to over 230 FE colleges across the country, and Client Development Manager, Bharvi Patel says there’s never been a better time to consider a career in education.

“While many industries are floundering in the current economic climate, the numbers enrolling at Southgate College are as high as ever,” she said, “and as such we need plenty of lecturers to meet this demand. We’re currently looking for people that have experience in subjects as diverse as Motor Vehicle Studies, Child Care, Construction and Business Studies, so that our students can continue to learn and qualify on these courses.”

The events will focus on the benefits of lecturing or assessing and show how it can contribute to a healthy work/life balance by fitting around other commitments. With anyone currently working in a vocational career having the knowledge and ability to teach part time in a Further Education college there’s not even any need to spend a long time studying. The skills and knowledge gained in your day-to-day job are enough to get started initially and teaching qualifications can be obtained at a later stage.

Bharvi added, “There is so much emphasis at the moment on flexible working, especially as the right to request flexible working is being extended to parents of children under 17 years of age from 6 April. However we know it’s not always easy to find employers willing to offer these terms.  As well as the lengthy holidays, many courses require just a few hours lecturing or assessing a week, which makes it ideal for fitting around another job or family life.”

The events are being held at The Public Restaurant, Southgate College, High Street, Southgate, N14 6BS from 12pm – 8pm.
