SUPPORTING ROLES REQUIRE A BOOST
Colleges across the UK are appealing for individuals to spare a few hours of their time to help students with special needs fulfil their potential and get the best marks possible in their studies.
The new term has seen an increase in the number of Learning Support Workers (LSWs) required at the college, as more students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or sensory impairment enrol on courses. Protocol National, a company that specialises in providing lecturers, NVQ Assessors and LSWs to FE colleges nationwide is working with numerous colleges to boost numbers, but say they still need more people to step forward.
“Learning Support Workers carry out a vital but rewarding role within schools and colleges, providing one-to-one support to students. Their main job is to attend lectures, tutorials and other activities to ensure learners have a full understanding of the lesson. They may also offer support by taking notes, offering advice on time management or revision skills, helping students use the library or supervising practical tasks. Equally, sometimes students just need someone there to listen and encourage.
“Working as a LSW only takes a few hours a week, so it can easily fit around an existing job or home life and can be a great way to supplement an existing income whilst really feeling like you’re making a difference.”
