COLLEGES OFFER NEW OPPORTUNITIES

As the credit crunch bites and New Year prospects look increasingly uncertain, Further Education colleges are providing people with alternative ways to subsidise their income.

Over the last few months, enquiries from people interested in working in the education sector have increased dramatically. Figures from the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) show recruitment enquiries sent to the organisations website have increased by 40 per cent since the start of the credit crunch and Protocol National, who provide lecturers and NVQ Assessors to FE colleges nationwide, have reported increased interest in roles .

Protocol National said, “In times of economic slowdown jobs teaching your skills to others can provide an excellent and fulfilling way to supplement your income flexible to your needs. Working within a Further Education college not only offers part time hours that can fit around another job or home life but it also offers a great sense of achievement which is something that many find they value and enjoy.”

Roles at colleges across the UK include part time lecturing, assessing or offering assistance as a support worker. While lecturers teach students skills in the college environment, assessors are generally more focused on workplace learning. They provide support and guidance to candidates taking NVQs in their own workplace, observing them as they work towards their qualification.

“Anyone currently working in a vocational career has the knowledge and ability to teach part-time. The skills and knowledge gained in your day-to-day job are enough to get started initially with teaching qualifications being obtained at a later stage.

“ Assessors should hold at least NVQ Level 2 or the level higher than the one they will be assessing and an A1 or A2 assessing award but those without assessing qualifications can sometimes study towards them while they start earning .”
