Motor Vehicle Workers Urged to Make Use of Existing Skills

Protocol National is urging those affected by the current economic climate to consider putting their skills to use in the classroom rather than the workshop.

While industries such as motor vehicle and construction are suffering during the downturn, college courses in these subjects remain as popular as ever with learners and as such there is an ongoing demand for lecturers and assessors to pass on their valuable skills.

Protocol National, a company that specialises in providing part-time lecturers and NVQ Assessors to FE colleges nationwide is working with many colleges to help place experienced individuals in lecturing and assessing positions. From the numbers applying, it is clear that many people don’t realise the opportunities that exist.

“At the moment there is so much focus on‘re-skilling’ those who are out of work or feel their jobs may be threatened, that no-one is really being told how they can put their current knowledge and qualifications to use.

“We are always looking for people with experience in vocational trades such as motor vehicle, building and construction and engineering who can spare a few days or hours a week to teach or assess learners in the college or at the workplace. The fact that these people have worked in their field for many years is a huge benefit as far as we’re concerned, because it means they have real life experiences that students can learn from.”

Working within a Further Education college can be an excellent way of supplementing an existing income, as it not only offers part time hours that can fit around another job or home life but it also offers a great sense of achievement - something that many find they value and enjoy.

While lecturers teach students skills in the college environment, assessors are generally more focused on workplace learning. They provide support and guidance to candidates taking NVQs in their own workplace, observing them as they work towards their qualification.
