Who could be the Advanced STEM Leader for your college?

The Bloodhound Advanced Leaders Award is a special award to find the learners who want to be STEM leaders for their college and really enthuse the judges that they want to be the scientists and engineers of the future. This award should be seen as an outstanding opportunity for students to gather career information from a range of adults working in the field or fields they are hoping to pursue or are curious about

The award is in two parts - firstly learners write a letter of application to become an Advanced Leader for STEM. In this letter they are applying for the 'post' of Ambassador for the college. They should write about how they help others with their STEM activities and to list the STEM activities that they are currently engaged in, enjoy and would like to do next!
They are then asked to interview a person who works in the field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Help can be given to locate a suitable interviewee via the STEM Ambassadors programme managed by STEMNET. This is an organisation of professionals who have willingly given up their time to further the understanding of their profession with schools and educators. Learners should research the person they are to interview and submit the final article and application. They can submit a video interview or podcast however a written article must be submitted also to achieve the award.

The winner of the Bloodhound award will be presented with a special certificate by Richard Noble and receive a Bloodhound 1k Club Gold Membership worth £75. They will also be invited to ‘The Doghouse’ at Bristol to see the car being built and talk to the engineering team. Plus we’d like to feature some of the STEM leaders in future editions of The Bloodhound Bulletin.

BLOODHOUND SSC at Southgate College

In February 2010, Southgate College successfully linked with Enfield EBP (Education Business Partnership) and had a fabulous two days engaging local primary and secondary schools and local employers. With the help of an exciting presentation by Science Made Simple, children of all ages were wowed by the science and even more wowed by the Show Car which despite the terrible rain was a huge draw in the College car park.

The learners at the College had really embraced the project producing some amazing artwork to highlight the potential speed of the car.
